What is DBSA West--Suburban Chicago?
We are a local chapter of the Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance, serving the Western Chicago Suburbs and surrounding areas. DBSA West--Suburban Chicago meetings are held in Downers Grove, Illinois. DBSA is a non-profit, peer-led, all-volunteer organization with the mission to improve the lives of people living with mood disorders.
At DBSA West–Suburban Chicago, our support group meetings for patients
provide a welcoming environment where people share experiences,
personal feelings, information, understanding, and strategies for
living successfully with these illnesses. There are the six key
elements of DBSA support groups: focus on self-help, peer-led, safe
& accepting, confidential, meet regularly and free of charge. We
also offer a separate caregiver’s support group exclusively for friends
and family of those with mood disorders.
The participants in
DBSA Patient support group meetings are persons diagnosed with a mood
disorder or believe they may have a mood disorder. The facilitators are
peers diagnosed with a mood disorder. We ask that family members and
friends not attend patient groups, but attend the Caregiver’s group
instead. No registration is required.
Mood disorders are biochemical, medical illnesses involving an imbalance of brain chemicals. While our support groups may be a great addition in your recovery, these serious illnesses warrant treatment by a psychiatrist or other mental health professionals.
